Smoldering

I watched as the cigarette burned down the paper...
I walked out of the house, which opened out into the run-down porch. My grandfather sat on the rickety wooden chair and looked ahead watching the tumble weeds roll by. He's sitting, leaned on his knees, his callassed hands resting on the wrinkles upon his face. His face wrinkled and leathery like an aged pair of worn boots. Crystal, crystal blue eyes. Like the icy water on a cold winter's day. His eyes reminiscing a past memory and moment. They told a story, his skin may show age, like a hard worked life, but his eyes have a lot of life in them. His thick mustache sat on his upper lip like a catapiller on a branch. The hump on his back arched, carrying the weight and sadness of his childhood. I watched as the cigarette burned down the paper, smolding as time wore on.

Mockingbird by Eminem

Yeah
I know sometimes things may not always make sense to you right now
But hey, what daddy always tell you?
Straighten up little soldier
Stiffen up that upper lip
What you crying about?
You got me

Hailie I know you miss your mom and I know you miss your dad
Well I'm gone but I'm trying to give you the life that I never had
I can see you're sad, even when you smile, even when you laugh
I can see it in your eyes, deep inside you want to cry
Cause you're scared, I ain't there?
Daddy's with you in your prayers
No more crying, wipe them tears
Daddy's here, no more nightmares
We gon' pull together through it, we gon' do it
Laney uncles crazy, ain't he?
Yeah but he loves you girl and you better know it
We're all we got in this world
When it spins, when it swirls
When it whirls, when it twirls
Two little beautiful girls
Lookin' puzzled, in a daze
I know it's confusing you
Daddy's always on the move, mamma's always on the news
I try to keep you sheltered from it but somehow it seems
The harder that I try to do that, the more it backfires on me
All the things growing up his daddy that he had to see
Daddy don't want you to see but you see just as much as he did
We did not plan it to be this way, your mother and me
But things have gotten so bad between us
I don't see us ever being together ever again
Like we used to be when we was teenagers
But then of course everything always happens for a reason
I guess it was never meant to be
But it's just something we have no control over and that's what destiny is
But no more worries, rest your head and go to sleep
Maybe one day we'll wake up and this will all just be a dream

[Chorus]
Now hush little baby, don't you cry
Everything's gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up little lady, I told ya
Daddy's here to hold ya through the night
I know mommy's not here right now and we don't know why
We feel how we feel inside
It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby
But I promise momma's gon' be alright

It's funny
I remember back one year when daddy had no money
Mommy wrapped the Christmas presents up
And stuck 'em under the tree and said some of 'em were from me
Cause daddy couldn't buy 'em
I'll never forget that Christmas I sat up the whole night crying
Cause daddy felt like a bum, see daddy had a job
But his job was to keep the food on the table for you and mom
And at the time every house that we lived in
Either kept getting broken into and robbed
Or shot up on the block and your mom was saving money for you in a jar
Tryna start a piggy bank for you so you could go to college
Almost had a thousand dollars till someone broke in and stole it
And I know it hurt so bad it broke your momma's heart
And it seemed like everything was just startin' to fall apart
Mom and dad was arguin' a lot so momma moved back
On the Chalmers in the flat one bedroom apartment
And dad moved back to the other side of 8 Mile on Novara
And that's when daddy went to California with his CD and met Dr. Dre
And flew you and momma out to see me
But daddy had to work, you and momma had to leave me
Then you started seeing daddy on the T.V. and momma didn't like it
And you and Laney were to young to understand it
Papa was a rollin' stone, momma developed a habit
And it all happened too fast for either one of us to grab it
I'm just sorry you were there and had to witness it first hand
Cause all I ever wanted to do was just make you proud
Now I'm sitting in this empty house, just reminiscing
Lookin' at your baby pictures, it just trips me out
To see how much you both have grown, it's almost like you're sisters now
Wow, guess you pretty much are and daddy's still here
Laney I'm talkin' to you too, daddy's still here
I like the sound of that, yeah
It's got a ring to it don't it?
Shh, momma's only gone for the moment

[Chorus]

And if you ask me too
Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird
I'mma give you the world
I'mma buy a diamond ring for you
I'mma sing for you
I'll do anything for you to see you smile
And if that mockingbird don't sing and that ring don't shine
I'mma break that birdies neck
I'll go back to the jeweler who sold it to ya
And make him eat every carat don't fuck with dad (haha)

This song, "Mockingbird" by Eminem, is a song about his life describing his early relationship between his wife and daughters. The song melodizes Marshall apologizing to his two daughters while rapping about his failed marriage. This song imploys parallel structure "I'mma give you the world, I'mma buy a diamond ring for you, I'mma sing for you." A mockingbird in this song is a symbol for hope and for Hailie to keep her head up, her father is there for her every step of the way. As well, he displays onomatopoeia in the line "Shh, momma's only gone for the moment." This song is noted as a narrative song, memories of Mathers' past. Triple scheme, "When it spins, when it swirls. When it whirls, when it twirls. Two little beautiful girls." Metaphor is used in this song when he states "Papa was a rolling stone." Mathers is alluding to a nursery rhyme,"mockingbird" in the line "Now hush little baby, don't you cry." The mood thats set in this song is saddness and regret. This song is quite depressing yet intrigueing to want to know more about Eminem's past and present.

Megan, What??

I'm too good for words...
I shouldn't even have to write a college application letter. People are begging for me to attend their college. It's preposterous.  But I'll write one anyways, so I don't make other people feel bad about themselves. My name is Megan "The Best" Ehlers, Bill Gates gave me my middle name. But you probably already knew that because my name is in the dictionary. I am the best.

I am the reason that Waldo is hiding. I invented time, so I am in control of the time continuum . In the womb, I recited the alphabet...In Latin. When I laugh, I laugh in 40 different languages.  In addition, I came up with oxygen, so oxygen needs Megan Ehlers to survive. I am the best.

Oprah is jealous of me. Leap Year was created souly to enjoy one more day of Megan Ehlers in the year. As well, I know the last digit of pi. Back in the day, I compared notes with Einstein. I do not age. I can walk across the Atlantic ocean within a mere 2 hours, it takes me so long because I need to stop for a snack. On a good day I cure the common cold in minutes, perfect Eminem's raps on the spot and if it's a Tuesday, teach cats how to play the piano, like my cat Mozart. I am the best.

You know, come to think of it, I don't even know why I'm applying for your college. I am too overqualified to suit your school anyways. I'm known all over the world for my many accomplishments and achievements. I'm a big deal. I KNOW I am the best

"You have barely said five words to me since you got home Bill," exclaimed Susan.

Bill picks up the daily newspaper and begins to scan the page. The couple sits in silence, both heads filled with thoughts and unanswered questions.

"Well...?" demands Susan.

"Why don't you just go ask Rob!" proclaims Bill.

Shock and confusion fills Susan's face.
"What on earth are you talking about?" asks Susan, "What does Rob have to do with anything?"

"I saw you talking to him earlier today, don't lie," Bill remarks.

Anger soon consumes her body as she rises from her seat, fixing her bunched up frills on the rim of her dress. She went speechless, she had nothing to say to her husband, except for six words.
Susan replies, "You want to know the truth?"
Bill gives a quick head nod demanding the truth.

Only in the Movies...

Powerful and intriguing! Two of many words used to describe Gary Sinise's remake movie,  "Of Mice and Men." John Steinbeck displays a novel of two Amercan men looking for work in the Great Depression. The comparison of the two, both the novel and movie shows great similarities! Sinise flashes his directing and acting skills to make a moving film inspired by many. His acting takes a lead through George Milton, a stubborn, small man with a big heart. His friendship follows though his life with his challenged friend Lennie Small. Sinise portrays a good job in showing George's protectiveness with Lennie. The last scene shown in both the movie and novel is Lennie's death. Sinise directs an impacting ending that shocks most viewers. Overall the movie was well directed. Sinise gets voted 5 stars for its compelling story line and full force acting skills.

She Is The Apple of My Eye :)

At the end of the day George hurriedly shuffles the horses back into their rightful stalls,  waiting for the apple of his eye to show her face once again.
"George?" asks Curley's wife. And as luck would have it, she stands there, seductively in the barn doorway waiting for her lover to turn around.
"Well aren't you just the bees knees darling, exclaims George. I thought you weren't going to show."
"Well I'm here aren't I?" she snaps back.
George stands nervously in the barn, confused.
"I found another man George, and he's making the bacon, Curley's wife states. Money doesn't grow on trees, and you aren't providing for me. Do you catch my drift?"
Shock covers George's face. "My hands are tied baby, I'm already crossing the line sneaking around with you without Curley's knowledge.
She gives George the cold shoulder. "It's my way or the highway bub, I'm the cat's meow and my man knows that."
"Why don't you just see eye to eye with me?" cries George.
"Save the drama for your mama Georgey baby. When you separate the boys from the men, you just don't make the cut!"
This blows George away. He ponders, thinking he should show some backbone.
"You know, short pleasures are often long regretted, states George. So your right, chill out, and shove off. I have no need for you anyways!" "No use crying over spilled milk," said George.

Stiff as a board, Curley's wife stands staring, stoned face at the man she used to love.
"Hit the road Jack, pleads George. You've been hit with the ugly stick anyways!"
Curley's wife turns, and walks away, out the door that lead her into her fate.
"See you later alligator! yells George. Time to call it a day."
